“Eat Clean, Eat Green!” Sounds familiar? Our alter ego often time reminds us with this phrase every time we binge on empty calorie snacks.

Filipino consumers are very much fond of snacking. Data shows that Filipinos are not the only snack junkie in the Asian market. According to the leading market research company Mintel (Marketing Intelligence), Japan remains to be the number followed by China and India. Furthermore, Mintel also enumerated the four mega-trends that will shape the Asian market in terms of new product launches for snacking.

Smart snacking is now coined to healthy snacking. This trendy term of “smart snacking” is usually natural/organic, farm to shelves concept, unique in format (flavors/shapes/size), conveys an interesting story and must have an attractive packaging.

2016 was declared as the International Year of Pulses by the sixty-eight sessions of United Nations General Assembly. This declaration was adopted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Philippines to provide opportunity to raise awareness and to celebrate the role of peas and other pulses in feeding the world. Even more importantly, it recognizes the contribution of pulses to health, nutrition and sustainability.

Talking about Pulses, Filipinos are no longer stranger to these food group. Yes, you heard it right! Chickpeas (Garbanzo), Dry beans (green pea,  split yellow, whole green etc.) and regular beans such Kidney, Mung, Fava, Pinto etc… They belong to a general name called “Pulses”. Pulses may look small, but they are packed with the right amount of macro and micro nutrients.

Here are some interesting facts that you might not know:

  1. Did you know that 100 g of boiledsplit lentils contain:
  2. more than 5 mg of iron*, a mineral useful for preventing anemia
  3. 11 g of protein, which is about triple the protein content of rice?
  4. Did you know that 100 g of boiled common beanshave:
  5. 5 g of dietary fibre, which improves stool volume and bowel transit,
  6. 8 mcg of folate,a vitamin that reduces the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida in newborn babies?

The food industry can pave way for new product launches that most countries – both developing and developed are trying to promote. The goal is to fill in the nutritional gaps that diets often lack, great substitute to animal-proteins, which are higher in fats and provide essential nutrients for adults and esp school-aged children.
